Few operas have been returned to, reinterpreted and loved as deeply as La traviata. Its power lies not in spectacle alone, but in the clarity of feeling at its heart.
For Act III of The Making, we were drawn to the way a familiar story changes through the artist who inhabits it: their choices, their feeling, their perspective, and the lens through which they tell the story.

For the one-of-a-kind piece inspired by the story of La traviata, the Aysgarth sofa was chosen for its contrast of structure and softness: a square frame balanced by generous, feather-filled cushions.
Upholstered in crisp white linen, the piece holds its reference lightly. The camellia becomes the defining detail: a small gesture towards Violetta's story, shaped through fabric, proportion and restraint.
Inspired by the Royal Ballet and Opera’s long history of producing model boxes for set design, artist Florence Sweryda created a miniature paper theatre for The Making.
Based on the Main Stage of the Royal Opera House, the piece brings together the craft, storytelling and imagination behind performance with our one-of-a-kind opera and ballet pieces. Set within a miniature world inspired by The Sleeping Beauty, it offers a different lens on the collaboration and the many creative hands behind it.
