Carmen is one of opera’s most recognisable works, vivid, immediate and alive with the force of character. It is a story of instinct and intensity, where emotion is never far from the surface.
For Act II of The Making, we looked to fabric - its colour, texture and form - as a way of expressing that energy. Inspired by the story of Carmen, this one-of-a-kind sofa uses fabric to do more than dress a familiar form. It gives the piece character.

Colour, texture and detail are not simply decorative choices. They shape mood, presence and character.
Christine Rice, Mezzo-Soprano, The Royal Opera
For the one-of-a-kind sofa inspired by the story of Carmen, red is more than a colour. It brings emotional heat, richness and presence, giving the piece its first expression of character.
Led by colour, fabric and detail transform an understated sofa form into something more expressive. Deep red velvet sets the tone, while taffeta ruffles, fan-like pleated scatter cushions and a tarot-inspired motif bring theatrical energy, flourish and a darker thread.
A choice that changes everything.
Ricky Partner, Chief Marketing Officer, Sofas & Stuff
Fabric is personal. It gives a sofa its character, changing the energy of a piece, the feeling of a room and how it reflects the person who chose it.
